Vaco is hiring for a Controller opportunity in Shaker Heights, OH. This is a direct hire opportunity that is 100% onsite.

Summary:
The role of the Controller is an integral part of the Business Office responsible for coordinating and assisting in the preparation of financial reports and oversees the functions of accounting, audit, and budgeting. The Controller also oversees the functions of accounting in a supervisory role.
The individual must be detail-oriented and operate with extreme accuracy in a multi-tasked, fast-paced environment. The individual must be a team player and possess excellent organizational skills and an ability to appropriately prioritize the tasks at hand. Experience in Microsoft Office programs is required, including strong and demonstrated skills in spreadsheet-based financial analysis. Experience with Blackbaud, or comparable software, is preferred.


Responsibilities:
  • Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to general ledger accounts and documents transactions.
  • Analyzes financial information detailing assets, liabilities, and fund activities to ensure accurate recoding and presentation of all data.
  • Prepare, post, and reconcile all investment activity (statements, distributions, subscriptions) and related accounting entries, and prepare all associated spreadsheets and analyses.
  • Assists the CFO in the preparation and monitoring of department budgets and forecasts working with administrators and department heads concerning budget deficits, etc.
  • Coordinates the implementation of accounting systems, including accounting policies and procedures, chart of accounts and accounting control procedures which verify the integrity of all systems, processes, and data.
  • Collects data and prepares appropriate tax returns, including Form 990, and ensures filings are submitted on a timely basis.
  • Performs general accounting, month-end and year-end closing procedures including fiscal year general ledger.
  • Processes daily cash receipts and performs monthly general ledger reconciliations.
  • Reconciles accounts payable and accounts receivable, Advancement, and Business Office records, payroll, and bank accounts.
  • Payroll/Retirement processing consisting of:
  • Reconciles all payroll accounts.
  • At the CFO's and HRD's direction, prepares the annual faculty and staff contracts and employment-at-will letters.
  • Remits the employee and employer contributions to the 403(b) plan.
  • Acts as the lead on the year end audit.
  • Coordinates and prepares reports, schedules, and information for the audits, including annual inventory cost reports and depreciation schedules.
  • Act in the Administrative role capacity with the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) for all required reporting.
  • Responsible for managing the account department and supervising the accounting staff including Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree with a concentration in accounting
  • Minimum of five years' experience in a related field. Educational or non-profit institution experience preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office programs is required, including strong and demonstrated skills in spreadsheet-based financial analysis.
  • Strong organizational skills to be able to work in a demanding environment with multiple deadlines. Must be able to establish and recommend internal and external policies to ensure the financial goals are met.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to be able to relate to faculty, staff, parents, Board of Trustees, and school community members and effectively communicate key data and complex accounting issues.
