Highlights

The January jobs report issued Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed employers added 49,000 job postings in January, after cutting 227,000 positions in the month prior. The report also states that around 406,000 people left the labor force last month and more than 4 million have left since the pandemic started. However, applications for state unemployment benefits have declined.
Unemployment continues to drop— though it remains 4% higher than before the pandemic—but the unemployment rate isn’t our economy’s only metric of success. The U.S. is vaccinating Americans at a pace of more than 1 million a day, and large parts of President Biden’s proposed $1.9 trillion pandemic relief package are expected to pass. Workers will likely choose to re-enter the job market as vaccinations expand, restrictions on businesses lift and students return to the classroom.
